Richard A Kirk's Jabberwocky 12/07/2011
I came across the artist Richard Kirk today and I still cannot draw my eyes away from his extraordinary otherworldly creatures and toadstools. We see insects, fungus and plants that come to life, plants appear to be singing and blackbirds are dressed up in dinner jackets, where are they going and what are they up to? He also writes a little bit about what has conjured up each picture for him, not too much but just enough to make you wonder. My favorite is a creature in his work is a monkey that has twigs in place of ears, see if you can spot him, I’m not quite sure why I am so fond of him but I would like to meet him. Text below is Richard’s comments about his work. The Cukoo’s Promise, Ink on Paper 2010 I've always been intrigued by stories where people are seduced into entering some magical place. It never ends well. I had just finished The Children's Book by A. S. Byatt when I did this piece. Inx, Ink on Paper, 2010 The artist and sphinx are combined in a form that suggests a question mark and therefore a riddle. The artist's hands are brushes, suggesting that he has drawn himself into existence in an effort to find meaning and truth. Wow! This work is really amazing. I haven't seen anything like this done in a long time. My eyes just wonder over each lines. Phenomenal work!
